Its Powai location is another advantage. Mumbai is home to companies across finance, consulting, manufacturing, technology, FMCG, logistics and other sectors, giving students access to a strong business ecosystem.

CAT

Admission Process

The broad process is:

Step 1: Appear for CAT

Candidates need a valid CAT score for the regular MBA admission process.

Step 2: Meet the cutoff

Candidates meeting the prescribed overall and sectional CAT requirements are considered for shortlisting.

Step 3: Personal Interview

Shortlisted candidates are called for the PI stage.

Step 4: Final Selection

Final selection is based on a composite score involving CAT performance, PI, academics and work experience, as specified in the admission policy.

Work experience is not compulsory for the regular MBA, although it can contribute to the selection score.

IIM Mumbai Cutoff

For the MBA 2026-28 batch, the minimum CAT cutoff for the Open category is 85 overall percentile, with sectional cutoffs of 80 in VARC, 80 in DILR and 75 in QA.

SC

PwD

These are minimum qualifying cutoffs, not guaranteed admission percentiles. IIM Mumbai states that the actual cutoff for shortlisting may be considerably higher depending on the number of candidates being called for the PI.

Therefore, CAT aspirants should target a strong percentile rather than preparing only for the minimum cutoff.

     Academic and research facilities

Student life also includes clubs, committees, cultural activities, sports, case competitions, industry interactions and institute events.

The residential format allows students to spend significant time with peers from different academic and professional backgrounds, creating opportunities for networking and collaborative learning.

Is IIM Mumbai Worth It for an MBA?

IIM Mumbai can be worth joining for students who want strong management education and industry exposure, particularly in operations and supply chain.

Its key advantages include:

     Long-standing NITIE legacy

     IIM status

Strong operations and supply chain reputation

     Mumbai location

     Industry interaction

     Multiple MBA programmes

     Competitive placement outcomes

     Strong alumni network

The institute can be particularly attractive to students targeting consulting, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, analytics and related management careers.

However, students should look beyond the IIM tag. The ₹25 lakh programme fee is a significant investment, so candidates should compare the programme with other MBA options available to them and consider their career goals before accepting an offer.

Conclusion

IIM Mumbai combines the legacy of NITIE with the identity of an IIM, making it an interesting option for CAT aspirants. Its strongest differentiator continues to be its expertise in operations and supply chain management, while the general MBA also provides exposure to finance, marketing, HR, analytics, strategy and sustainability.

With its Mumbai location, residential campus, industry connections and strong placement figures, IIM Mumbai has become a management institute worth considering for students aiming for a career in business and management.
