Thinking about taking CUET UG 2027? Before you fill in the application form, check whether your qualification and background actually fit the eligibility rules. This short verification step can shield you from facing substantial difficulties when you apply.
A quick note: The official CUET UG 2027 eligibility criteria haven't been announced yet. Everything below is based on the CUET UG 2026 information bulletin, which is the most recent official reference. Once the 2027 bulletin is out, read it carefully, as some rules could change.
Also keep this in mind: clearing the basic CUET UG eligibility doesn't automatically make you eligible for every course at every university. Individual universities retain the authority to establish their own requirements regarding marks, subject specifications, age criteria, and additional conditions.
The entry requirements are fairly broad, but you still need to study your target university's admission rules before locking in your CUET UG subjects.
CUET UG has no upper or lower age limit. Your age won't stop you from sitting the exam.
That said, don't assume every university feels the same way. Some institutions set their own age conditions for certain programmes, so check the admission details of the university you're aiming for.
The basic requirement is Class 12 or an equivalent qualification.
● If you've cleared Class 12, you're eligible to take this examination.
● If you're appearing in Class 12 in the relevant year, you can also take CUET UG, subject to the admission rules that apply.
Your qualification should come from a recognized Board, university or examination system that is treated as equal to the 10+2 level.
CUET UG isn't restricted to one Board. A wide range of Class 12 and equivalent qualifications are accepted.
The final exam results of 10+2 conducted by approved Central or State Boards qualify as acceptable credentials. This includes CBSE and CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations).
A two-year Intermediate or Pre-University examination from a recognized Board or University is accepted.
The final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the NDA is also included.
Students who completed their Senior Secondary through the National Institute of Open Schooling can apply, provided they studied a minimum of five subjects.
Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or abroad that AIU, UGC or an agency notified by the Ministry of Education treats as equivalent to 10+2 is accepted.
The Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination is on the list of accepted qualifications.
A diploma of at least three years recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education is accepted.
● GCE qualifications at the Advanced level from London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka examining bodies
● High School Certificate Examination of Cambridge University
● International Baccalaureate Diploma from the IB Office, Geneva
If you completed Class 12 or an equivalent exam abroad, or from a Board not named above, you need a certificate from the UGC confirming that your exam is equivalent to Indian Class 12.
You must have passed at least one earlier public examination, such as a Board or Pre-University exam.
Students from many academic backgrounds can apply, as long as their qualification falls under an accepted category. This covers:
● Central Boards
● State Boards
● NIOS
● Recognized Indian institutions
● Recognized foreign and international examination systems
If your qualification is from abroad or from an unlisted Board, be ready to show proof of equivalence to Class 12.
Diploma holders with a recognized diploma of three years or more are covered too. They should still check the rules of the specific university and undergraduate programme they want to join.
This is the part where many students slip up.
CUET UG is a common entrance test, but each university decides the admission criteria for its own courses. So the conditions you need to meet aren't the same everywhere. A university or programme might specify:
● Minimum marks in Class 12
● Particular subjects studied in Class 12
● Required CUET subject combinations
● Age conditions
● Category or reservation rules
● Specific academic qualifications
● Other programme-level requirements
Why subjects matter: You may be allowed to take CUET UG and still fall short of a course's subject requirements. For instance, a university might ask that you studied certain subjects in Class 12 or that you choose specific CUET subjects for a given programme. So go through your preferred university's admission criteria first, and only then finalise your CUET UG subjects.
The year in which you passed (or will pass) Class 12 can also affect admission. Each university or institution sets its own rules on this.Check your chosen university's website to confirm whether your Class 12 year meets its requirement.
Indian nationals in the following categories are admitted against reserved seats as per Government of India and State Government rules:
● OBC-NCL
● Gen-EWS
● SC
● ST
● PwD/PwBD
The actual reservation percentage, the certificates needed and other conditions depend on government rules and the policy of the university concerned.
CUET UG has provisions for candidates under the PwD/PwBD categories. According to provisions outlined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016:
● A person with benchmark disability is someone with at least 40% of a specified disability, as certified by the certifying authority.
● A person with disability is someone with a long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairment that, along with other barriers, limits full and equal participation in society.
● Specified disabilities are those listed in the schedule of the Act (Appendix-VII in the bulletin).
If you plan to claim PwD/PwBD benefits, keep the required certificate ready and follow the documentation rules that apply to your admission.
● No age limit applies to appearing in CUET UG.
● Class 12 or an accepted equivalent is the basic academic requirement.
● Students from many recognized Indian and international systems can be eligible.
● A recognized diploma of three years or more is also accepted.
● CUET eligibility and university eligibility are not always the same thing.
● Required subjects vary from course to course.
● Minimum marks and other conditions are decided by the university.
● Reservation depends on government and university provisions.
● Appearing in CUET UG alone does not guarantee admission.
The CUET UG 2027 eligibility criteria are quite inclusive. There's no age limit, and students from recognized Indian Boards, NIOS, certain international systems and eligible diploma backgrounds can all qualify to appear.
Remember that this article follows the CUET UG 2026 criteria, as the official 2027 rules aren't out yet. When the 2027 notification arrives, verify the final requirements and also read your preferred university's rules on subjects, minimum marks, age and course-specific conditions before you apply.

You should have passed Class 12 or an accepted equivalent exam, or be appearing in it, as permitted under the rules.
Age does not serve as a barrier to exam participation. Individual universities may still have their own age conditions for admission.
